Salvador Dalí, the pioneer of Surrealism one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, was born in Figueres on 11th May 1904. Throughout his life, and despite having a career that took him all over the world - including Paris and America - he always returned to the Costa Brava.

 

It was in Cadaqués in 1929 that Dalí met Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, a Russian emigrant who was married at the time to a colleague from the Surrealist group. Dalí and 'Gala', as her called here, fell in love and she became his muse, model and later, wife. Dalí and Gala soon brought their first property in the area, an old fisherman's hut surrounded by pines and olive trees just up the coast in the bay of Port Lligat.

Barcelona is world famous for its architecture but not only thanks to Gaudi. In the 1990s, the architecture of Barcelona changed a lot to welcome people from all over the world. To get from a point to another in Barcelona, it is advised to take the metro because there are many stations located a bit everywhere in the city.

 

If you are an architecture lover lost in the city center whereas you want to visit the Parc Guell, it is better to take the bus 24. It leaves the bus stop of Paral-lel (in front of el Molino) and drives down the streets of Paseo de Gracia where you can see (through the windows and sitting on a seat) and admire buildings such as la “Pedrera” or la Casa Batlló for instance.

In Barcelona we have the luck to enjoy the sun almost every day. When it is hot, people usually go swimming to Barceloneta or the Sitges beach. Nevertheless, when these beaches are overcrowded it is not the best place to go. Although there is an ice-cube bath which is called “Frigidarium” you do not need to be cold to enjoy the heat of the “Hammam”. You do not have to be frozen either to have a swim in the “Caldarium” which is the hottest bath (40ºc).

Sagrada Familia

The expiatory church of La Sagrada Família is a work on a grand scale which was begun on 19 March 1882 from a project by the diocesan architect Francisco de Paula del Villar (1828-1901). At the end of 1883 Gaudí was commissioned to carry on the works, a task which he did not abandon until his death in 1926. La Pedrera is one of the two great buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi on Passeig de Gracia, the other being Casa Batlló.

La Pedrera or Casa Milà has various theories have been advanced as to the source of Gaudí's inspiration: from ocean waves to a variety of specific mountains, even a mountain crest with clouds. Situated in Passeig de Gracia 92. The Pedrera which means "The Quarry" because of its stone like appearance, was originally called Casa Milà. In 1984, UNESCO classified Casa Milà as a World Heritage site. Today, Casa Milà is used for cultural expositions.
