The main annual festival inBarcelonatakes place on September 24th. "La Mercè" is the patron saint ofBarcelona. One of them, because the other is "Santa Eulàlia". It has been an official city holiday since 1871.
During this week there will be many events like concerts, sport, activities for children, traditions, fantastic firework, etc. The biggest musical event during Merce is the BAM music festival (Barcelona Acción Musica,) which many top artists, you can check the list in: http://www.bcn.cat/bam/2011/cat/artistes.html
BAM concerts take place normally in the old town, on Plaça del Rei, Plaça Reial, Plaça dels Angels, Av dela Catedraland also on Parc Forum in the Diagonal Mar and in the Old Damm beer factory "Antiga Fàbrica Damm" in the Eixample area ofBarcelona.
The Festes dela Mercèare traditionally opening by a celebrity. This openning calls "pregó". This year will be the journalist Joaquim Maria Puyal the protagonist
The called "Toc d’Inici" is the first procession ofLa Mercefeaturing mythical figures of "Gegants" and "Capgrossos" from medievalBarcelona. This is the route: de Montalegre, c. dels Àngels, c. del Pintor Fortuny,la Rambla, Palau dela Virreina, Liceu, c. de Ferran i pl. de Sant Jaume. Gegants and capgrossos make all this route dancing to the sounds of the traditional music.
Also don’t lose "Diada castellera amb les colles locals" groups of human tower builders on Plaça de Sant Jaume on 24th September at 12.30h
The Piromusical takes place at the Magic Fountain on Montjuic, that is the final event from Merce Festival. This is a fantastic music, fireworks, water, light show around the famous Magic Fountain of Montjuic.This year Jordi Bonet will choose the music, don’t lose it!!
