Barceloneta is a district with narrow streets and an urban structure based on building houses in rows, with the original form to create houses without patios and looking out on two different facades. The Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1992 were the perfect excuse to reform this district of fishers and to recuperate the beaches and the port (Port vell), and they constructed a dock so people could enjoy the seaside in a comfortable way. The most attractive places of this district are located in the two boulevards: the one of Barceloneta and the boulevard “Joan de Borbó”.

At the beginning of the boulevard “Joan de Borbó”, you can find the Historical Museum of Catalonia, on the “Plaça de PauVila”, number 3. Its objective is to show and expand the history of Catalonia. Today, the building is known as the “Palau de Mar”.

Four squares break the charming monotonia of the blocks in this district. In the street “Maquinista”, you will find “Plaça Pompeu Gener”. The “Plaça de la Font del Mercat”, next to the market of Barceloneta, and a little bit futher, the square of the writer “Boscà”. But the most emblematic is the square of Barceloneta, a few metres from the boulevard “Joan de Borbó”. Here, you will find the baroque church of “Sant Miquel del Port”, built in 1755. The house next to the church was inhabited by Ferdinand de Lesseps, the famous constructor of the Canal de Suez.

When we follow our route, we get to the street “Almirall Cervera”, where you can see the “Casa dels Pescadors”, beautiful for its façade, decorated with ceramics.

The gastronomy has always been one of the biggest attractions of this district. Fish, paella, “fideau”, etc. are typical meals in the bars and restaurants of this district.

In the street Maquinista, you will find the historical “Ramonet”, where the tables are old barrels on which you can taste a wide variety of marine tapas.

Four streets further, you will find “Can Major”, the specialist in rice dishes and “suquet de peix”. One street further, you can find “Casa Costa”, the most traditional but also the loudest place of this district.

At the end of the boulevard “Joan de Borbó”, the beach of Sant Sebastián starts. Here you can have a walk at the seaside, with its high palms, and you can get until the Olympic Port.
